I have five wonderful house cats. I would like to offer them treats, but every store...

Unfortunately, there are no published studies looking at the effects of baking powder on animal health. We do know that baking powder is a leavening agent that causes the dough to rise during the baking process, i.e. during baking of cookies or cakes. The mode of action during leavening is to release carbon dioxide when the powder is mixed with water. This causes the dough to rise. Since the carbon dioxide is released during the baking process or before the cat ingests the treat, it is theorized that the baking powder is no longer active. This action and the fact that baking powder is used at very low levels leads one to believe that baking powder is not a health issue in cats. As always, when offering treats, limit the number of treats offered so you don't have issues with obesity. If treats are offered, adjust the daily food offered accordingly so the caloric intake is not excessive. Keep in mind that none of these ingredients will contain taurine that is necessary for heart and eye health.
