A commom cause of a dark, copious discharge in a cats ears is ear mites. These can be diagnosed by taking the cat to a veterinarian who can examine some of the material under a microscope for the mites. If mites are present the veterinarian can clean out the ears and then prescribe drops to eliminate them. If mites are not the culprit, then an infection might be present that needs antibiotics.
