It's not recommended that diatomaceous earth be put on the food. Diatomaceous earth (DE) is more effective when spread around the food bowls to serve as a boundary that the insects or bugs will have to walk through to get to the bowls. To insects, DE is a lethal dust that contains razor sharp edges. These sharp edges cut through the insect's protective covering drying it out and killing them when they are either dusted with DE or if it is applied as a wettable powder spray. If they ingest the DE it will shred their insides. The only information I've seen with respect to actually feeding DE was in cattle where DE was used to treat internal parasites. There are no reported issues from feeding DE to animals, but for safety reasons it is recommended that DE only be used as an insect repellant.
