If other animals are in the home, some sort of separation or safe area until they get to know one another is necessary. The cat should have a safe, secure location that includes food, water, a litter box and a comfortable resting area. Many cats also need a safe area to hide in when they first come to a new environment. This can be a simple cardboard box or even under the bed. If the cat is frightened, it is important to have things nearby. Over time most will become familiar with their new environment and begin to venture out.
