Scratching is a normal cat marking behavior. Cats will use their claws on objects to leave a visual mark to denote their territory, to sharpen their claws and when stretching. Many cats can be taught to use scratching posts if certain conditions are met. First, the post should be in a prominent area where the cat spends their time. It also helps to place the post next to the areas the cat is scratching. Next, the post should be large enough for the cat to stretch out when scratching and made of a material that will rip and tear. The cat should also be rewarded for using the post with attention and food treats. Finally, the areas where the cat has scratched before should be covered until the cat has learned to use the new scratching post.
