Some recent studies seem to indicate that cats like a rather large area for elimination including the pre-elimination digging and the post elimination covering behaviors. Other studies have indicated that if a cat is going to have a preference for litter material, they prefer a clumping litter. Certain additions to litter boxes such as liners are primarily for owner convenience and perhaps are not always to an individual cat’s preference. In some cases providing a very large litter box such as a large plastic storage box may give a cat additional space and digging options. In addition, most cats prefer a very clean litter box that has the waste material removed daily and the entire box emptied, washed and refilled weekly.
