It actually is not uncommon for cats to hiss and perhaps fight when one cat leaves the house and then returns. It is speculated that cats recognize each other by smell and the returning cat may not smell the same at they did before. In some cases rubbing the remaining cat with a towel and then rubbing the returning cat can help mix their scents and aid in re-acceptance. In other situations slow re-introductions using food treats and time will allow the cats to feel comfortable with each other again.
