Keeping inquisitive cats under control can be difficult. A good first step is supervision. If the cats are noticed near the tree they can be shooed away using a noise distractor. When they cannot be supervised they should be confined in a safe area. In some situations a small fence like those used to mark off a garden can keep the cat away. Some cats are also deterred by motion sensors that when activated let out a stream of compressed air that scares the cat away. Since they can be injured climbing the tree, supervision and confinement seem to work well.
