Declawing cats has become a controversial topic. In some European countries the procedure is discouraged or not permitted. In the United States and Canada a cat is often declawed. Teaching a cat to scratch in an appropriate location can usually be accomplished if an owner is willing to put in the time. Attention to the location of the scratching post, the type of post and other considerations can increase usage and decrease scratching on household possessions. Although declawing is often cited as a reason for behavior problems there is no scientific or statistical evidence for that claim. In fact countries that do not allow the declawing of cats show similar distribution of behavior problems in cats as do countries where declawing is commonly performed. It would seem best if each case were decided individually rather than routinely declawing all cats
