My cat has developed lots of tiny black particles under her chin, close to the hair...

The area under the chin in a cat can become inflamed and have areas that are swollen due to blocked skin follicles. Often this disorder is called feline acne. The problem can be minor or severe with crusty, painful lesions. A bacterial culture and sensitivity may be useful, but no bacteria may be found in the early stages. In some cases poor grooming contributes to the problem. Treatment can include cleaning with a prescription shampoo, antibiotics and trying to keep trauma to the area by rubbing to a minimum. In some cats the condition may wax and wane or become chronic. A veterinary examination can help determine if a cat has feline acne and how it should be treated.
