My cat randomly attacks me, not while being petted.

There are many reasons a cat may show aggressive behavior. In some cases the cat is frightened or scared and is trying to escape. In other situations the aggression is occuring within the context of play. When cats play they often use predatory sequences such as stalking, pouncing, grabbing and biting. This type of aggression is common in young cats who live alone or with cats who will not play with them. In some cases increasing appropriate play outlets and play time with toys can decrease aggressive play directed toward people. A veterinarian should be able to help you determine what type of aggressive behavior is being exhibited and help devise a treatment plan.
