I adopted Rowdy, a purebred Ragdoll, last August. He's seven. They told me beforehand...

It makes sense that Rowdy would join you in bed while he still felt uneasy/concerned about the new environment. Once he became used to the new place, his confidence grew and perhaps he no longer felt the need to stay quite so close. Also, bed snuggling tends to be seasonal with cooler weather months increasing the tendency. Ragdoll cats have lots of fur and it likely feels too warm to sleep with their special human during the summer months! Cats love routine, and once he’s established the habit of hand rubbing in the morning he may believe that’s what gets him breakfast.

Similarly, spring and summer prompt all sorts of interesting, strange and sometimes scary outdoor sounds from other animals. That certainly could explain Rowdy’s rambunctious demands to go explore the great outdoors. A cat’s ability to hear sounds we can’t detect more than likely explains his tracking of “poltergeists” as well. It could be something as mundane as a cricket behind the plaster.

To help Rowdy better accept an exclusively indoor lifestyle, enrich his territory in the house. Add lots of second-story territory in terms of cat trees, shelf space or countertops where he can lounge, boxes or cat beds in which to hide, and perhaps some window perches with bird feeders or baths outside for kitty viewing.

Many cats prefer to control how they touch and are touched. When you recline in bed, Rowdy knows you can only move so far and perhaps he feels more in control and can allow himself to head-butt your hands. When standing, you can move in any direction or swoop down with your hands and pick him up. So maybe that’s why he prefers ankle rubbing and avoids close contact with your hands.
