Cats vary in how social they are toward other cats. It appears that cats form social attachments, but they are to individual cats. What this may mean is that they liked that particular cat but not all cats. Therefore, they may or may not be receptive to living with another cat. Often it can take a great deal of time for them to accept another cat. It is important to have adequate resources that are spread through out the home. This means plenty of litter boxes in multiple areas, multiple food bowls and resting places. For an elderly cat it may be useful to have some time every day where they can rest undisturbed by the other cat. Finally, quick release cat collars with bells placed on each cat may help them keep track of one another so that they can avoid encounters.
