I have a 2 year old cat that we just rescued. She goes to the litter box fine, but lately...

A cat may urinate outside of the litter box due to an infection, so that the first step should be a veterinary visit to check the urine. The next issue to address is the litter box itself. The box should be large enough for the cat to easily sniff and turn around in and engage in covering behavior. Some cats prefer a litter box without a cover. It is also essential that the litter box be kept very clean. Waste material should be cleaned out daily and the entire box emptied, washed and refilled weekly. The litter box should also be placed in a convenient, private location. Often these simple steps will help resolve the problem.
