Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disorder (FLUTD) is a common medical malady in cats. Symptoms include straining to urinate, blood in the urine, urination outside of the litter box and medically there may be bacteria and crystals in a urine sample. In some cases no bacteria are found and some cats are thought to have interstitial cystitis which appears primarily inflammatory but the cause is still unknown. Many therapies are often employed including dietary changes, long term antibiotic therapy, medication to change the urine acidity, medication to diminish inflammation and/or pain, increasing water intake and minimizing environmental and social stresses to try reduce the incidence of bouts.
