Before anything else, please accept my deepest sympathy on the loss of Rameses. What a blessing that Buck shared his last moments, and stayed by his side. They must have loved each other very much.
As far as your question, normal eyes do not change shape or color. However, at the end of his life Rameses may have suffered from an inflammation of the iris of the eye called uveitis, a common condition in cats. The signs of uveitis are striking--the eyes change color. This painful condition also causes the cat to squint (which might change the shape of the eye from round to slanted). Various viruses--or injuries--can prompt uveitis, so it may be that Buck was exposed to something that prompted a similar symptom. Yes, it does sound eerie. But to be safe, I would urge you to ask the veterinarian to double check Buck’s health since some of the systemic diseases that prompt uveitis can be quite serious.
