What are domestic cats?

The term domestic cats is used to describe cats that have lived in proximity to people for thousands of years. Most often people are referring to multicolored or solid colored cats that are not of a specific breed. It is speculated that our companion cats have evolved from small wild cats that were native to Africa and parts of Europe. For the most part our domestic cats interbreed among themselves, but breeding with wild cats is thought to occur from time to time. Over the years various breeds of cats have developed with specialized haircoats, colors, body types and personalities.
