Many cats are quite frightened at the veterinary hospital by a combination of factors. First, they rarely are in their carrier. Second, they rarely go in the car. Third, as they wait in the office they are exposed to odors and noises that are unfamiliar to them. Finally, they are handled in a way that they are not used to. Helping the cat cope with veterinary visits entails getting the cat used to all those things. Leaving the cat carrier out, feeding treats inside and making it a safe place can help diminish fear of the crate. Having an appointment scheduled early in the day when perhaps fewer animals are present may also help. Pleasant, fun visits where the cat gets treats, petting and no treatment can also help associate pleasant things with a veterinary clinic. Handling a young kitten frequently and rewarding good behavior can help them get used to handling. If the cat also shows aggressive responses to visitors, then other protocols may be needed to make that cat safe around people.
