I have two cats, a 4-year-old and a 7-year-old. I free-feed but mix half Purina ONE®...

Both the Purina® Cat Chow® and Purina ONE® lines have products designed for the nutritional needs of both adult and senior cats. Either Purina Cat Chow brand Cat Food or Purina Cat Chow Vitality 7+ Formula would be an excellent choice for your older cat. Purina Cat Chow would be a good choice if your senior cat is healthy, active and at an appropriate weight. If your senior cat has begun to slow down and is somewhat overweight, it might be an ideal time to switch to Purina Cat Chow Vitality 7+ Formula. This formula is lower in fat, but higher in antioxidants. The balanced nutrition in the Purina Cat Chow Vitality 7+ Formula will help your cat achieve a healthy weight while helping support your cat's immune system.

The Purina ONE line of products also has several formulas that would be appropriate for your cat's nutritional needs. These would include Purina ONE Healthy Weight Formula and Purina ONE Senior Protection Formula. They also have several formulas designed for the nutritional needs of adult cats. While these products do contain meat or poultry as the first ingredient, they also tend to be a little higher in fat and calories than the Purina Cat Chow products.

With respect to mixing of these diets, this should not be a problem. You would benefit by offering a little variety to your cats diet, but most importantly you would be feeding two nutritionally complete and balanced diets. Since you do feed free choice it is also important to continue to monitor body condition. If you begin to see or feel that your cats are starting to put on extra body weight or lose body condition, it is very important to adjust the amount of food offered accordingly.
