My cat was once a very loving and affectionate cat, loving to climb in my lap and fall...

Yes, the many changes could have influenced his behavior. In addition, his age plays a large role. Kittens act like--well, like trusting and cuddly babies. As they mature, cats take on an adult personality and naturally lose some of that warm-and-fuzzy cuddly attitude. Your one-year-old cat is no longer a baby; he’s grown up and has his own ideas about interaction.

With time as he adjusts to the new environment, he should relax and hopefully feel more comfortable with himself and you. It’s difficult for us humans to “let go” of wanting to hold, pet and snuggle but at this point, allow your maturing cat to control interaction a bit more. Rather than hands-on contact, entice him with interactive toys that still keep him near you and reinforce his notion that YOU are loving and fun to be around. Entice him to sit on your lap using a feather toy--but once he’s there, don’t pet him. Instead, have your hands available for him to head-butt and push against so he must entice you (rather than the other way around). See if that helps.

Remember--your loving kitten is still there, but now wrapped up in an adult package. He’s also testing the limits, and learning how to act and react in his new world as a grown up. Cats show love beyond snuggles--we just need to learn to recognize and appreciate all their foibles.
