The Soft Paws work very well (little plastic coverings that go over the nail) and infection/problems with them is very unusual. Even though your new cat's nails split easily, I would have no concerns using the Soft Paws. If your cat does shed the outer coat of his nail more frequently, it is possible the soft paws may not stay on quite as long.
