One week after putting down our orange 16 y/o male cat Troubles, and while trying to console our other 16 y/o male Balinese, Scratches, I thought I'd lost my mind because I kept hearing a faint, tiny meow. I looked all over the house but it seemed to be coming from my kitchen.
As I looked out my window, I noticed a tiny, tiny all white kitten in my neighbor's yard, moving in circles and mewing. My husband, who was heartbroken over the loss of Troubles, was reluctant to begin again with a kitten but after seeing my face he encouraged me to go get the kitten.
I ran into my neighbor's yard and picked up the tiniest ball of white fur. Once safely indoors, I called our veterinarian who advised me, after soliciting some critical information, to run to the nearest pet store and buy mother's milk and a feeding set. I was to feed her (yes, it was a she) every 2-3 hours according to the directions and bring her in to see him tomorrow.
It turns out she was only one week old but seemingly healthy. She couldn't even see yet! My husband and I bottle-fed Snowball almost around the clock for a few weeks, and then taught her how to eliminate, use the litter box and eventually to eat "real" food. Not long after that we lost our beloved Scatches, too, and the little white furball helped us through that difficult time as well.
What is interesting is that her personality and quirky characteristics are so similar to our beloved Troubles, that we are convinced she is his reincarnation, having been born on the day he passed over the Rainbow Bridge. She loves olives as he did. She hates having her nails trimmed, as he did. She is aloof, as he was, yet completely in charge of the household, as he was.
She is now approaching 5 years old and is the matriarch of a household of 4 other cats -- three males and another female (her younger half sister) -- a ferret and a finch, both males. She is all white except for two small gray spots right above each eye, like eyebrows. And although the veterinarian tells me her eyes are blue because there are no gray-eyed cats, I'm not convinced. She is an amazing cat.
