What are the different nutritional needs of an indoor cat vs. an outdoor cat? Why are...

The nutrient needs of cats will differ mainly by the physiological state they are in (growth, pregnancy, lactation, adult maintenance). Although there are vastly different requirements in the micro-nutrients (vitamins, minerals), the main differences between diets formulated for indoor cats vs. outdoor cats is the levels of protein, fat and energy (macro-nutrients). For example, Purina® Cat Chow® brand Cat Food Indoor Formula is formulated to contain a lower level of fat and fewer calories than Purina® Cat Chow® brand Cat Food Complete Formula. This is done because most indoor cats are less active and lead a more sedentary lifestyle than cats that have access to the outdoors. By reducing the calorie level it helps reduce the chance that an indoor cat will become obese. Purina® Cat Chow® Indoor Formula also contains a special fiber blend to help reduce the incidence of hairballs.
