It is always prudent to isolate any new animal from the current residents until it is clear that the new animal is well and healthy. In the case of a kitten, it also may be a good idea to wait until vaccines have been administered.

I would like to know what is considered "significant" weight loss in a cat.
If a cat loses at least 10% of their body weight in a short amount of time without being placed on a diet this could be a signal of a problem. Sudden weight loss should always be investigated starting with a veterinary visit and any necessary tests to determine if a medical problem is the cause of the weight reduction.

Most adult cats usually already use a litter box on a regular basis. When a cat goes to a new home, it helps to create a safe area for them with their food and water bowls, a resting spot and a litter box. Placing them in this area when they are not supervised can help make them feel safe and secure and also learn where their litter box is located. Over time it should become evident that the cat has learned where his toileting area is and greater access to the home may be possible.

How long can a kitten be left alone in a safe room with food and water?
Keeping a kitten isolated for long periods of time is not appropriate nor does it help with bonding to family members. A kitten could be left alone in their safe area over night and for several hours during the day. But, it is essential that a kitten have plenty of interactive time with people so that they become well socialized and learn the appropriate way to interact with their human family. Along with food and water, a kitten needs a litter box and resting area in their safe area.

While your kitten is on a routine now, it is likely that her napping times may change as she gets older. As adults, a cat will often sleep or rest most of the day if not kept stimulated with fun toys and activities. A good routine would have time daily for play, eating, resting, social interactions and grooming times.

What does lethargy in a cat mean?
When a cat is lethargic, they usually are inactive and this may be accompanied by a decreased appetite. These signs could be symptoms of an illness and if they last more than a day or so the cat should be seen by a veterinarian.

Although cats live in social groups, they do usually choose whom they will associate with and which cats they will avoid. When we create social groupings within our homes, it is not a guarantee that the cats will get along. In some cases the problem is exacerbated by limited resources in the environment. When there is more than one cat in the home there should be at least two of everything including litter boxes, food and water bowls and resting areas. Cats may also compete for owner attention and this can create conflicts.

Where can I find the best toys for my 3-month-old kitten?
Kittens like toys that are light and easily moved with their paws. Avoid very small items that could be eaten and cause intestinal blockage. It is also prudent to avoid string and yarn because they also might cause problems if eaten. Small wads of paper, and wand type toys are often preferred.

How do I introduce my kitten to the outdoors and to my two adult outdoor cats?
A very young kitten would do best being indoors where they will be safe from other animals and possible diseases. It also is important to have the kitten vaccinated and micro chipped for permanent identification. Introductions to other cats should be done slowly and always supervised to avoid aggression and possible injury. Keep in mind that indoor cats live longer and healthier lives than cats that live outdoors.

What is PKD?
PKD stands for Polycystic Kidney disease, a disorder where large portions of the normal kidney tissue is displaced by cysts. Both kidneys are usually involved. The disorder is thought to be inherited and most often diagnosed in longhaired cats such as Persians. The disorder is often undetected until the cysts become large enough to interfere with normal kidney functioning. While initially not life threatening, the long-term prognosis depends on the severity and progression of the cyst formation over time.

This is a great question. Cats are called "seniors" at about 8 years of age as they may start to slow down and their body systems may start to age. With that said, I consider the average life span for an indoor cat to be about 16, so you should have many more years with Spice. Many cats do not turn gray as they age. At this point she's still an "adult" but will be a "senior" next year. But remember that's just a title and it doesn't mean Spice is old or ill! She's the same cat she was!

My cat suffered a trauma two weeks ago and the main problem is that he can't raise his...
It sounds like your cat had quite a trauma. I worry about a cat that can't raise his tail as it could signify possible damage to his spinal cord. The nerves that help control the tail can also control his bladder and defecation. If you haven't talked to or seen your veterinarian, this would be my recommendation. I feel it’s important that your cat's neurological status is assessed. Steroids or prescription anti-inflammatories may also help speed his recovery and keep him more comfortable.

My cat has allergies and was prescribed a Megestrol acetate medication. Recently, my...
First, I would try to find out what your cat may be allergic too. If she goes outside, flea preventative is absolutely necessary as many cats are allergic to even one flea bite. From there, we think of allergies as environmental like pollens, grasses, trees, dust, etc and also think of food allergies. If there is any possibility your cat could have a food allergy, you could talk to your veterinarian about a hypoallergenic or limited ingredient diet.
Regarding the shots, I suspect your veterinarian is talking about steroid shots. I personally prefer and recommend using oral steroids rather than injections as it gives you more control over the dosage. Some of the injectable steroids have also been implicated in contributing to the risk of diabetes with long-term use. I would talk to your veterinarian more about the options and see if you can find an option you are both comfortable with.

I am so sorry to hear that your cat has been diagnosed with cancer. His licking of the plastic bags, or the lack of it very likely has nothing to do with his cancer and is probably just coincidence. Unfortunately, as with people, we don't always know why some cats get cancer and some don't. There's been no implication of plastic bags (or plastic for that matter) with cancer in cats so I hope it will help ease your mind knowing you did nothing wrong. I wish the best for you and your cat.

Which cat collars are better fabric or plastic? My cat lost hair with the fabric kind.
It can be normal for a cat to lose hair where their collar is. This is often from the friction from the collar and not due to the type of collar. You of course, want to make sure that the collar is not too tight. You should be able to fit two fingers underneath the collar. If you cannot, it is too tight. If you can fit more, it is too loose and you run the risk of your cat catching it in her mouth or putting a paw through it. Both types of collars are fine although I personally believe cats may prefer the fabric collars because they are not so stiff. Regardless of the type, make sure it is a "breakaway' collar so that if your cat catches it on something it will snap off and help prevent injury to your cat.

Obesity is the leading nutritional disorder among both dogs and cats. Studies suggest that approximately 12 percent of cats examined at veterinary clinics each year are overweight. Obesity can occur following spaying/neutering, if your cats' weight is not carefully monitored.
Following spaying or neutering, a good body condition can usually be maintained by closely monitoring of your cats' diet. Once your cats are spayed/neutered, you can continue to free feed your cats; however, if your cats begin to gain weight, it may become important to measure the amount that you feed each day. Measuring will ensure that your cats don't receive too many calories. If you notice your cats consuming the daily amount well before the next scheduled feeding, it may be helpful to divide the amount you feed each day, feeding half in the morning and half in the evening.
It will be especially important to eliminate any table foods and limit the number of treats provided each day. Treats and table foods have the potential to add extra calories to your cat's diet, and those extra calories may lead to excessive weight gain.
In addition to diet management, provide your cats with regular exercise and play periods. Regular exercise should also be helpful in preventing obesity in spayed or neutered cats.

To be on the safe side, it is probably not a good idea to feed your cat chicken bones. While the bones themselves contain calcium, a mineral cats require, both raw and cooked chicken bones are brittle. These brittle bones can splinter and become lodged in, or cause damage to, the gastro-intestinal tract.
Since I don't know why your veterinarian suggested only wet food for your cat it is difficult to make recommendations on a feeding regime. Nutritionally, either a complete diet of all wet food or all dry food is feasible. The pet food label should state if the product is nutritionally complete and balanced to support the nutritional needs of your adult cat. The best way to determine if the amount of food being offered is sufficient is to evaluate the body condition of your cat. If you can feel excess fat around the ribs and back, your cat is probably over weight. In contrast, if your cat’s ribs are very visible and easily palpated, your cat is probably to thin. Regulating the amount of food offered based on these differences in body condition is recommended. Canned food can be fed to meet your cat’s nutritional needs, however dental health can be compromised since your cat isn't being offered dry food which can be used to help reduce tartar and plaque build-up on your cat’s teeth. The chewing of dry food serves as a mechanical way of scrubbing the teeth clean. This is not as effective as brushing your cat’s teeth or having routine dental cleanings by your veterinarian, but it can help in reducing tartar buildup on your cat’s teeth.

Yes, you’re correct that a Hearing Dog will be a working partner and companion. In many cases, these dogs tend to be smaller size because they alert by jumping up--and a Great Dane would flatten most folks. I’m sure that the various placement organizations take into account the needs of the individuals applying for service animals. If they know that you have cats, they should partner you with an appropriate Hearing Dog that has been trained to ignore or at least get along with the cats, and that will be a huge plus in your favor.
Usually I recommend that the new pet be confined to one area/room of the home during initial introductions. That tells the cats that only a part of their territory has been invaded. The cats should meet the dog through paw-pats under the door, listening and sniffing the new smells, for at least a week or longer before a face-to-face meeting. You can also help the cats recognize a benefit to having the dog around by feeding them a very special treat on the outside of the doggy room. Help out the cats by providing them with lots of second-story places beyond nose-reach of the dog. They can observe the newcomer from on high once the dog has full run of the house. There are also many books with more tips to introducing and integrating cats and dogs.

We have adopted a lovely British shorthair six weeks ago. He is now almost five-...
Honestly, I don’t know. Kittens learn important lessons at this age, and if he’s decided that “man hands hurt” he may never want you (or another man) to get too close. You have two things going for you, though. First--he’s still quite young and can with patience un-learn this lesson. And second--you’ve acknowledged the problem and are willing to change and offer alternatives. BRAVO!
Teaching this baby that you are safe and worthy to be loved will test your commitment because it will take time. Figure out how many days/weeks you punished with your hands. Multiply that amount of time by at least three--that’s how long it will potentially take. Three days hurting takes nine days to unlearn, while three weeks of being scared takes nine weeks to unlearn.
Start by keeping your arms folded when around the baby. Don’t offer to touch. Try using a long distance fishing-pole style toy to entice him to play with you from far away. Rather than feeding by hand, toss treats or kibble several feet away from you, and back up to let him come get it. Make things around you kitten-party-time (all things good!) to change this baby’s attitude. And by the way, the easiest and most humane way to teach cats not to sleep on the bed is to close the bedroom door to keep them out. Good luck.

My question would be whether Rudy asks to go outside each day or if you instigate the trip? If he doesn’t agitate for the walk, you might forego taking him outside for a day or so and see how he reacts. With the new kitten indoors to keep him company and offer some entertainment, he may not miss the outdoor excursions. But if he does pine to spend time outside, then there’s nothing wrong with the hour daily walk on the leash. You might try offering him an absolutely stunning treat/playtime that he ONLY gets once he’s come inside after a walk. That way he has something to anticipate when he returns, rather than wanting more of the great outdoors.

My cat is twelve years old. For the past year or so, every time my fiancé gets up off the...
What do you do when she runs to the food bowl? Speak to her? Follow her there? Refill the bowl after she’s munched? Behaviorists and trainers talk about “chaining behavior” in animals, which refers to one action prompting/cueing another action, which cues yet another and so on. Cats are incredibly attuned to these sorts of routines. So when your fiancé stands up, that starts the chain of behaviors--he stands, cat runs to bowl, is self-rewarded with food and/or additional attention, which chains-links to the next (probably pleasant) behavior.

They say that cats choose their loves, and this seems the case with this smitten Siamese. This breed does tend to bond very closely to only one or two people so it’s not unusual for a Siamese to pick a favorite person in the family group. It’s hard to say why he reacts so strongly to you over his longtime family members. It might be you give this cat the specific type of attention he craves, or you move/sound ‘right’ or even smell like the best thing in the world. I can’t predict how the cat will behave or feel when you move away, but I suspect that he will indeed mourn your loss.

My cat is seven-years-old. This question involves her cleaning, or lack thereof, after...
I hate to say it but there are just some cats that do not groom themselves well. This can happen if they are overweight and can't reach their bottom - if so then weight loss is the best course of action. But for many cats, this is just the way they are. At seven years of age, I don't feel there is much you can do at this point to teach her to clean herself. The best thing to do is to help her as much as you can. I usually just gently use a damp washcloth and a fine tooth comb for combing dried chunks out to keep her clean. Wish I had a magic answer for you but it sounds like your doing the best you can!

My eight-year-old male cat has suddenly become antisocial and lethargic. A visit to the...
I am glad you took your cat to the veterinarian and that his physical exam was normal. Refusing to eat and these kinds of changes are not normal. While his physical exam may have been normal, I would strongly recommend lab work if it was not done. Many times a cat may have a great check-up but lab values that are out of whack signifying kidney or liver disease. If lab work is all normal, I would consider gastrointestinal disease. Many times cats can have normal lab work but pretty significant inflammation of their intestines (inflammatory bowel disease) or pancreas. This is extremely common. It can be very serious when a cat is not eating, especially if they are overweight. This is due to the possibility of fatty liver disease. I would encourage you to return to your veterinarian and intervene. Your cat needs further diagnostics or medical intervention before things get worse. Good luck!

We have three indoor/outdoor cats, and recently started feeding a stray that has been...
This is a great question! First thing I would recommend, if it hasn't been done, that the stray's FIV (feline immunodeficiency virus or feline aids) status is confirmed. If he was tested with a "snap" test at the clinic, a western blot test should be done to confirm the results. The snap test is usually correct but with such a serious disease, its best to know absolutely for sure since no test is 100% accurate.
Regarding the FIV vaccine for your current cats. There has been a lot of controversy around this. First, if you vaccinate your cats, they will test positive for the virus...then you don't know if their positive test is due to the vaccine or if your cat has actually been infected by the virus. There is also debate on whether the vaccine covers for all the subtypes of the virus. For these reasons, as you've seen, many veterinarians and feline practitioners do not recommend this vaccine. Unfortunately, you are taking a risk if you bring this cat in, even if you vaccinate your cats. The only safe alternative is to limit your cats’ exposure to him. This is always a hard situation and a hard decision. Ultimately, it depends on how comfortable you are with the risks. This stray could still live a long, good quality life. Some shelters or cat adoption agencies have luck placing FIV+ cats in homes with other positive cats or in homes where they are only cats...this would be
another option. If you have more questions let us know and good luck with your decision.

My cat is losing his voice and makes funny noises when he breathes. I took him to two...
There can be multiple reasons for voice changes in a cat and the most common are laryngeal inflammation, infection, laryngeal paralysis or cancer. There are a couple options left although they may have already been done. In many cases, the throat needs to be looked at under anesthesia to get a complete view of the larynx and to assess it for paralysis. Hopefully your cat's oral exam was done under sedation or anesthesia, if not that is one step I would recommend. You also didn't mention using any anti-inflammatories in your cats; this would be another option to ask your veterinarian about as it could help. Hope this info helps and that you find out what's causing the changes in your cat's breathing and voice.

I have a kitten (Penny Lane) that is about 10 or 11-months-old. In May of this year she...
Bless your heart for taking on this sick little kitten. It is so hard to know what is going on without seeing Penny in person. But I can throw out a couple options. If she did have a parasite, even if it’s not showing up again, it’s not a bad idea to do a repeat worming medicine. Some parasites can really stick around. If her labs and x-rays were normal, I would also think about inflammatory bowel disease. This is an inflammation of the intestines that can cause vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss and decreased appetite; it can be one or any combination of these symptoms. This is a very common disease complex and while it is more common in middle-aged cats, I have seen it in young cats (including my own). Treatment can vary but the backbone is often using steroids. At this point, you've done so much, that it would hurt to perhaps try a steroid course at home. It sounds like you have a fabulous veterinarian but it’s always an option as well to get a second opinion; sometimes a new perspective can help. I wish you luck and hope that Penny Lane will turn around for you. Keep us posted.

Does the Guaranteed Analysis show how much of a nutrient is in a product, or does it show...
All pet foods are required by US feed law to contain a "guaranteed analysis" section. This table lists the major nutrients in a pet food and the guaranteed levels of these nutrients that are in the product. It is required that all pet food labels list the following guarantees:
- Minimum percentage of crude protein
- Minimum percentage of crude fat
- Maximum percentage of crude fat (if labeled as a low fat diet)
- Maximum percentage of crude fiber
- Maximum percentage of moisture.
By listing these guaranteed levels it allows the pet food buyer to compare pet food products based on nutrient content. It must be mentioned that these levels are just guarantees and the product must have at least/or no more than the level listed on the label. For example, a product may have a crude protein guarantee of 24% minimum. This means the product must contain at least 24% protein and may contain as much as 26 or 27% protein. This just illustrates that the levels stated for protein and fat are minimum levels and the products could contain higher levels of some nutrients. The values listed are not the required levels to meet the cat’s daily needs. Usually pet foods are formulated to exceed your cat’s nutritional requirements while still being considered complete and balanced.

I have two cats that eat the same amount of food with the same frequency, but one weighs...
Obesity can lead to health problems in cats of any age. And just as it is with people, once a cat becomes overweight, the excess weight is difficult to lose.
Obesity may make a cat more susceptible to a variety of physical disorders, such as impaired heart, breathing and liver functions and digestive disturbances. In addition, extra weight can cause increased stress on the skeleton, ligaments, joints and tendons, which can lead to degenerative arthritis. This particularly becomes a problem with older cats, as they tend to become less active as they get older. Overweight cats are at higher risks of developing diabetes mellitus and cats that are obese also run the risk of a reduced life span. Cats who are obese may have difficulty grooming themselves, making them more prone to skin problems, such as dermatitis. Folds of skin resulting from rolls of fat may invite infection.
I wouldn't be concerned that one cat weighs more than the other even though they eat the same amount of food. Similar to people, the metabolism of cats will vary from one cat to another. It's possible the cat that weighs less is more efficient in using the food he eats and thus stays at a lesser weight. The following are some suggestions to help your cats lose some of the excess weight:
- If your cats tend to beg for food, omit feeding food from the table. Sometimes this is sufficient to achieve the desired weight reduction.
- If your cat remains obese, reduce the amount of food that is offered. Feed only 65 to 75% of the previous intake, the amount depends upon the cat's body condition and the veterinarian's advice. It will be important for you to measure the amount you feed each day to ensure your cat receives a consistent quantity of food each day.
- Feed smaller portions of food, more often. Cat's are nibblers and will eat many small meals through the course of a day. Dividing your cat's daily ration into smaller portions, fed three to four times each day will help your cat pace himself, and reduce his likelihood of facing an empty food bowl.
- Avoid diets that are high in fat. Purina® Cat Chow® Vitality Formula Dry Cat Food would be an excellent choice at this stage in your cat's life. Vitality Cat Chow® is lower in fat and calories, to help your cat achieve and maintain a health weight. This diet would be acceptable to be fed to both cats, no matter their age or body condition.
While cats are not likely to respond to a planned exercise program, encourage your cats to exercise through play. Find a toy your cats have enjoyed over the years or dangle or drag a piece of string just out of its reach.
Keep in mind, your cats have probably very gradually gained weight over a long period of time. Likewise, it will take a long time for your cat to lose this extra weight. Be patient and be consistent. Your reward will be a longer healthier life for your cats.

Our two-year-old Persian constantly runs in front of the two males and puts her tail up...
What a flirt! Cats present their tails to each other sometimes as a greeting behavior. There are scent glands that help identify individual cats the way humans recognize different facial expressions. If she’s holding her tail straight up with the tip waving a bit, that’s indeed a feline “howdy.” If she then walks away, perhaps she’s using this as an invitation to play or interact.
Intact female cats will “flag” their tail in a similar way but then perform a “butt-up” with front end down in a play-bow. This lordosis position indicates she’s ready for the romance to begin.

My other cats will rub against me but I have noticed if I'm crying one boy cat comes by...
Cats closely bonded with their people often do seem to show empathy. The sounds of crying may even seem similar to a cat’s cries of distress. When a loving, sympathetic cat doesn’t feel well either physically or emotionally, it makes sense that he’d keep his distance until feeling better.
Source: http://www.catchow.com
Sometimes when my three-year-old male cat sleeps he meows in his sleep. Does that mean...
Cats and dogs do dream. We can’t know exactly what they dream, but like people, they probably relive normal waking activities. Since cats primarily meow at people, I suspect your cat’s dreaming about meow-asking for something (food, to be petted, let out). If an unpleasant dream, vocalizations more likely would be hisses or growls.
I do not recommend waking up sleeping animals. Startling a dog or cat from a dream (or nightmare) may prompt them to react and lash out before fully awake. If a pet seems to be experiencing a nightmare (growls, hisses, whimpers), you can try to gently wake them from a distance by tossing a soft towel over top of them.

My indoor neutered male cat loves to be petted. However, he will not let you touch him...
Isn’t it funny how very individual cats can be? Some cats “talk” more than others, while felines like yours may use scent more often. Perhaps he wants to know who else you’ve been petting (have you been unfaithful with another cat? LOL!). Or perhaps the hand-sniffing simply has become a ritual for him, a habit he’s established and feels comfortable continuing.

We rescued a kitty a week ago but we had already planned a trip overseas that will take...
What a great question! You don’t mention Manny’s age, but kittens need lots of attention and learn to bond with people while young. They later “generalize” this experience so that “all people are friendly” if they’ve been handled appropriately. So I would strongly recommend that Manny stay with your friend in her house during your absence.
