Your new cat is simply grieving for the loss of his familiar home and beloved family. You might ask the former owner to give (or lend) to you an article of clothing she’s worn but not washed, such as a tee shirt. This would offer a familiar scent to the lonely cat during this painful transition period.
I also really like the use of calming music for distressed pets. Harp music in particular has almost a sedative effect and sooth emotionally upset animals get through such things more easily. Please be prepared, though, for the transition to take many days and possibly a couple of weeks before this kitty adjust to the new life. Be patient--the cat’s world has been rocked, and you have no way to explain why. Bless your heart for taking on this needy feline.
