What is PKD?

PKD stands for Polycystic Kidney disease, a disorder where large portions of the normal kidney tissue is displaced by cysts. Both kidneys are usually involved. The disorder is thought to be inherited and most often diagnosed in longhaired cats such as Persians. The disorder is often undetected until the cysts become large enough to interfere with normal kidney functioning. While initially not life threatening, the long-term prognosis depends on the severity and progression of the cyst formation over time.
