It can be normal for a cat to lose hair where their collar is. This is often from the friction from the collar and not due to the type of collar. You of course, want to make sure that the collar is not too tight. You should be able to fit two fingers underneath the collar. If you cannot, it is too tight. If you can fit more, it is too loose and you run the risk of your cat catching it in her mouth or putting a paw through it. Both types of collars are fine although I personally believe cats may prefer the fabric collars because they are not so stiff. Regardless of the type, make sure it is a "breakaway' collar so that if your cat catches it on something it will snap off and help prevent injury to your cat.
