I have a nine-month-old kitten that has not been neutered. The reason is a very odd one...

Your kitten is likely what is called a bilateral cryptorchid. This is really not that unusual or odd. He probably does have testicles; they just have not descended into his scrotal sacs. The testicle can be in his inguinal canal or in most cases still in his abdomen. These undescended testicles still produce testosterone so can still bring on the male sex characteristics like spraying. There has also been some debate about whether the undescended testicle is more prone to cancer later on in life. I would talk to your veterinarian again. By examining him or doing some testing, they should be able to tell if he is producing testosterone. Surgery to remove the testicles in done, very similarly to a female's surgery. An abdominal incision is made and the surgeon searches for the undescended testicles; this is the tricky part as they can be very difficult to find. Good luck with this!
