My cat Sam seems to suffer from some sort of separation anxiety. I work for twelve hours...

Cats are social animals and do need regular interactions and attention. Most animals learn our schedules and providing scheduled, predictable interactions can be very calming. Regular playtime, feeding and social interaction should be provided daily. These sessions do not need to be long, but they should be predictable. A short playtime (5-10 minutes) prior to leaving for work, some petting or playtime upon return can help ease anxiety. Also providing an enriched environment, with rotating toys and play opportunities is helpful.
